Aloha Friday, The Hana Hou Edition

Aloha Friday, Issue 2, by Grady Gillan.

Sequels, by and large, suck balls. They're freighted with a certain self-awareness ('Will it live up to, or be better than, the first?' they always ask); they're obsessed with the overwhelming urge to add more (as if sheer volume alone will suffice), and, in the eyes of the audience, will always, no matter what, be compared to the first. Follow up in a similar fashion, and they'll say it's the same old shit; veer too far off-course, and they'll say you fell the fuck off. Call it the sophomore slump syndrome.

There are exceptions, of course, and Grady Gillan's Aloha Friday Zine, Issue Two, falls into this rather tiny minority. Gillan's tightly curated selections, which were, I imagine, pulled from hundreds of photographs, stun. (My personal favorites are the front cover, pictured above, and the center spread, seen below). Grady's second issue certainly lives up to, and surpasses, the first, for reasons that are obvious once you get both copies in your hand.

In case you missed the first issue, it's still available, for the paltry sum of 4 dollars (six bucks if your current residence is located outside Planet Earth), here. And, for those looking to get the second issue, Grady's having a release party next week (click here for details), where copies of issue 2 will be available for purchase for $3.
